Happy Valentine’s Day Reading!

Regardless of your personal relationship status, Valentine’s Day is always fun to celebrate with young students!   Here are some favorite read alouds:

cover art, Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli and Paul Yalowitz.
This is such a wonderful story about the power of love and friendship!
The Valentine Bears
The Valentine Bears by two favorites, Eve Bunting and Jan Brett.
Since the bears are always hibernating, they don’t get to celebrate until Mrs. Bear plans a surprise.  It’s interesting to contrast this book’s illustrations to Brett’s later style.
Love, Splat By Rob Scotton Illustrated by Rob Scotton
Love, Splat by Rob Scotton
Splat likes Kitten more than fish sticks and ice cream, but she calls him smelly.  What’s a cat with a valentine crush to do, especially when he has a rival suitor?
Just looking at Scotton’s illustrations makes me smile.
Any others to share?
Have fun,
Ellen

  1. I love the book The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. Cornelia Augusta takes advantage of a surprise rainstorm to create unique valentines for her friends.

  2. I am a huge fan of Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink by Diane deGroat. It is a story about Gilbert (a little possum–at least I think that is what he is!!!) and the not-so-nice valentines he makes for two of his classmates. In the end, Gilbert learns from his mistakes, and gets a second chance to make up for his Valentine’s Day prank.

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  3. Slugs in Love by Susan Pearson is super cute for younger kids. It is about two slugs that leave each other love notes in different parts of the garden.
